A shorter walk which explores some pleasant parts of the village.
A. From the Cross turn right (not up to the church, but the road signed to Shaftsbury etc) and walk up the road past the Surgery. Turn left into the drive of Yew Hedge House, then go through 2 gates to follow a path between the fences. Go through a gate at the bottom, then a pond is seen on the right, with a variety of wildlife. Cross the bridge and through a gate. Go along the left-hand edge of the field, and cross a stile by the gate on the left. Go straight ahead to a kissing gate under the horse chestnuts. Continue straight ahead to another kissing gate by the barn. Cross a bridge over the stream, go left with the path, then keep straight on (ignore the path on the left) to reach the road.
B. At the road turn left, and after 60 yards opposite Wyke House turn right through a metal kissing gate and follow the path up between the houses. On reaching a metalled road (Rectory Lane) turn sharp right between hedges. Turn right into Apple Acre for less than 20 yards, then left between hedges on a gravelled path. At the path junction, turn left between the barriers and go along a track (Legal Lane). (On the left, at a field gate with a kissing gate, you may return through Rectory Field. The path goes towards the right of the modern former Rectory ahead. Go through a kissing gate at the top of the field to reach Rectory Lane, turn right and then left to return to the Cross). If continuing along Legal Lane, note a very large oak tree in the field on the left, and a little further on, an old black poplar tree. Follow the lane round to the left to reach the road (Haywards Lane). Cross to Jacob’s Ladder and turn left on a footpath between hedge and fence. At the top of the road turn right, past a seat and then ahead on a narrow path. Turn left through an alley to come out on the High Street by the former Post Office. Turn left up the road to return to the Cross.
